Notice Battery light came on and steering wheel very tight. Drove home anyway.

Double check to see if there is still a serpentine belt in place around the pullies. This was a very common problem for these to throw their belts for no apparent reason. There are kits that fix this issue. The dealer does not carry. I have used these in shops and they work wonders. It will come with a new tensioner and I believe a new idler pulley and belt. Here is the kit number:Gates 38379K Serpentine Belt Drive Component Kit. Costs about $100. Problem solved!! Let me know if it is something different but it's usually due to this issue.
Update:
Yes the belt came off completely. Maybe due to water pump leak.
