Dodge Caravan Oil Pressure Alarm Light
Happend yesterday.
(1)
Q. 1998 dodge caravan, 3.3 litter engine. oil pressure light comes on while the vehicle is stopped.
A. Check with a gauge to make sure your oil pressure is within spec. If it is, replace the pressure switch. It is screwed into the block next to the oil filter housing.
(2)
Before you have major repair done on your car because of the "oil pressure light", review the list and see if any of these might be the source. Some of the things on this list are things you can do yourself, some only done by a mechanic (inexpensively), and others require the aid of a mechanic.
1. Check to see if you have a leak. Low oil levels can make the oil sensor light come one. Check your oil level following the manufacturers recommended procedure or use the information listed here http://autorepair.about.com/od/regularmaintenance/a/checkoil.htm. If you do not have a low oil level, but still suspect a leak, place a drip pan under the oil plug overnight. If you have a leak, you'll see signs of it there. Then take the vehicle to a trustworthy mechanic and let them trace the leak. It is possible for your engine to only leak when it is hot, so make sure you get the engine nice and warm before you put the car away for the evening and place the drip pan under your vehicle. Other signs of an oil leak are listed below as well as an "oily" exhaust that leaves it mark on your bumper or "blue smoke" as you drive/idle.
2. Check the coolant levels. If the coolant is low, the oil will heat up faster and cause a viscosity breakdown. When the oil viscosity is low (= thin oil), the oil sensor light can come on. If the coolant is low, add more. Keep in mind that an engine running hot will heat the engine oil to the point that it thins out and burns off in the cylinders. If the coolant level is fine, have the coolant (water) pump checked. If the coolant is not circulating well through the engine, you'll probably have coolant boiling over, too.
3. If you can afford to do it, change your oil to a higher or lower viscosity. Refer to your maintenance manual and your trusted mechanic. I say this because, if your oil is thinning out too much because the viscosity is too low, your "check oil" light will come on. If your engine oil is too thick, you engine will need added internal pressure to get it to circulate. At lower RPM (just like thin oil), your engine oil light will come one.
4. Have the oil pressure checked by other than an electronic means. Your trusted mechanic can place an oil gage between your oil filter and the rest of the engine or on the oil fill cap of the engine. If you are having an oil pressure problem that is seal-related, that should narrow it down. If you can't afford to do that, when you get your next oil change, replace: the oil fill cap, PCV valve, and air filter. All these contribute to the measurement of engine oil pressure by that picky little oil pressure sensor.
5. Have the oil pressure sensor checked. You may need some weird add-on to make it behave. Do a search for the following part and read and you should have a better understanding: "part # 05017800AA a terminal/wire/vent to the oil pressure switch connector". Never forget that sensor are usually engineered to report a problem well before a catastrophic failure can occur.
6. If you're driving a high-milege car, make sure you are up to date on all of the engine-specific services. For some vehicles, it is recommended that the head gaskets are replaced. If you have internal engine leaks because of it, this will solve most of those issues. Signs of this include: coolant visible in the crankshaft area (you can see this with the oil cap off), oil fouling your coolant (you can see this in the coolant reservoir), or smokey exhaust. Expect your trusted mechanic to recommend that you change your spark plugs, timing belt, and cam shaft gasket at the same time.
7. See if the oil pump needs to be replaced. A faulty oil pump can contribute to low oil pressure as it fails (but hasn't failed, yet).
8. Do all of the above BEFORE you take to recommendation to have your engine replaced.
I have a 1998 Chrysler Cirrus (I know it's not a minivan, but hear me out). I've been the single owner and have learned more about how engineering oversights or over-cautiousness can send you to the mechanic for just about everything.
Hope this helps!

New Wok
Bought from Amazon (The Wok Shop) - 12 inch Carbon Steel Wok with Helper Handle (flat bottom) - for 28.
The seller sent the "Seasoning Tip":
The wok is carbon steel and has to be seasoned to prevent it from rusting. The seasoning process is relatively easy to do. Just wash and dry your wok thoroughly.
Coat lightly, interior and exterior , with cooking oil. Bake in hot oven, 425 degrees for 20 minutes. Place in oven upside down. (before baking, remove side handle and cover spool handle with damp dishcloth and cover dishcloth with alum foil. This will protect your wooden handle. You will have to dampen cloth each time you bake because heat will dry out dampened cloth...2 times...) Remove from oven, let cool to touch and scour wok with an abrasive pad.
Scour the "seasoning" or patina away...like you want the wok back to its original finish. Wash, dry, coat and bake again...same process. Do this 2 times. After the last baking, you will not be able to scour the seasoning away...and that is the result you want. The wok is seasoned. The more you use the wok, the better and blacker it gets., You cannot ruin the wok. If you neglect it and it should get rusty, not to worry, Just scour away the rust and season again. A wok should last almost a lifetime. A wok also gets better with age...the older the better.
If you use a gas stove, you can try seasoning the salt method; just wash wok thoroughly and dry. Pour l cup of table salt into wok and with a high flame, stir salt constantly 20 minutes to 1/2 hour. Wipe wok clean and oil lightly with cooking oil. Voila! a seasoned wok with no muss no fuss. After the wok has been seasoned, it would be a good idea to stir fry a handful of pungent veggies, e. g. chives, onions, scallions, ginger, garlic, until charred. This will remove the metallic. Toss charred veggies out and wok will be seasoned and ready to wok.
You can use your wok to not only stir fry, but deep fat fry, steam, braise, stew, boil, saute, smoke and pop popcorn.
The more you use your wok the better and blacker the wok gets and will develop a nice patina and will get to a point where it will become naturally non-stick.
I followed the tip and seasoned the work!

Dodge Caravan Air Filter
Replaced with Fram CA3660 (from Autozone $7). The filter seems to be a little too think. The filter cover cannot be closed tightly. Only 1 clamp is now applied.
This seems to be the case when I replaced it last time because the lower clamp was loose too when I accessed it today.
Next time maybe use a different brand.

Last changed at 66,000 miles.

Toyota check engine light
Went to Autozone and checked the code. Still P0171. Went home and removed MAF and it looked clean. Anyway sprayed it with MAF cleaner like crazy. Disconnected battery negtive to suppress the light.
Let's see when it will come back.
It came back in 2 days.
2010-03-04: Took it to garage and was told MAF needs to be replaced for 250.
2010-03-06: Bought a MAF from Autozone for 155 (tax included) and put in the car. The idle was a little rough for the first 2 miles. Then it become smooth. Need to get 65 refund for the 'core price'.

Toyota check engine light
It has come on for a few weeks now. Last week I cleaned the MAF and the light came back the second day.
SOme info:
P0171 OBD-II Trouble Code
Technical DescriptionSystem Too Lean (Bank 1)
What does that mean?Basically this means that an oxygen sensor in bank 1 detected a lean condition (too much oxygen in the exhaust). On V6/V8/V10 engines, Bank 1 is the side of the engine that has cylinder #1.
Note: This DTC is very similar to P0174, and in fact your vehicle may show both codes at the same time.
SymptomsYou will more than likely not notice any drivability problems, although there may be symptoms such as a lack of power, detonation (spark knock), and/or a hesitation/surge on acceleration.
Ocode P0171 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
•The MAF (Mass Air Flow) Sensor is dirty or faulty. Note: The use of "oiled" air filters may cause the MAF to become dirty if the filter is over-oiled. There is also an issue with some vehicles where the MAF sensors leak the silicone potting material used to protect the circuitry.
•There could be a vacuum leak downstream of the MAF sensor.
Possible SolutionsPossible solutions include:
•In the vast majority of cases, simply cleaning the MAF sensor does the trick. Consult your service manual for it's location if you need help. I find it's best to take it off and spray it with electronics cleaner or brake cleaner. Make sure you are careful not to damage the MAF sensor, and make sure it's dry before reinstalling
•Inspect all vacuum and PCV hoses, replace if necessary
•Check for a dirty fuel filter and proper fuel pressure
